PAYETTE NATIONAL FOREST-- Council Valley is bordered on three sides by miles of National Forest land with some great FISHING and camping. There are millions of HUCKLEBERRY bushes, and there are usually some good patches left in August.
HELLS CANYON, the deepest gorge in North America, is only about an hour's drive west. Ask directions to Sheep Rock where you can get one of the awesome views of this gorge.

The town of Riggins (1 hr. north on Highway 95) sits on the banks of the Salmon River and features salmon and steelhead fishing.
PAYETTE LAKE & MCCALL (45 minutes northwest of Council) -- Beautiful Payette Lake is popular for fishing, water skiing, sailing and all types of water sports. The town of McCall features year 'round resort accommodations. Summer: kayaking, mountain biking, boating, horseback rides, guided hunting trips. Winter: downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, annual Ice Carnival with ice sculptures.
The SEVEN DEVILS MOUNTAINS overlook Hells Canyon. The edge of this primitive area is about two beautiful hours northwest of Council where you will find remnants of the historic Seven Devils Mining District. (It's a rock hound's dream!)
